The air filter is an essential part of your car’s intake system. Combustion requires just the right mix of fuel and air. For this to happen, the air first needs to go through the air filter. Its main purpose is to ensure that the air is free of dirt and foreign particles, which can cause engine damage.
This is simply a fibrous material in accordion-style folding set-up between a plastic or metal frame. It could be made from cotton or fabric-like material. The air filter’s frame is connected to the intake manifold via a large plastic tube which controls air flow.
The air filter must be replaced regularly. Although it is difficult to estimate a specific time or mileage for replacement, the life of the filter depends on how much dirt it absorbs. Some filters last for as much as 30,000 miles. Most car maintenance companies would suggest that the air filter be replaced at least once a year for preventive maintenance. If you live in an area with dirt roads or heavy pollution, the air filter replacement frequency may change.
If unchanged for a long time, a dirty air filter can restrict airflow to your car’s engine. This causes poor performance and decreased fuel mileage. Additionally, it can also affect other systems such as the car’s emission control system which regulates the car’s air-fuel mixture. The restricted airflow can also affect how your spark plug works.
