There are a lot of things you should know about your vehicle. Knowing even the most basic concepts would help you maximize the performance of your car.
Whether it’s a sedan, an SUV or a van, there are some similarities when it comes to your automobile. They all have engines, transmissions, chassis, wheels and other automotive parts that need to be cared for.
This article discusses the different transmission types. They are the following:
- Manual Transmission – If you look at car classifieds and come across “MT”, this is the abbreviation for manual transmission. It mean the car has five or more gears to be selected manually with a shifter. The shift stick is usually found along the center of the cabin, but in some cases – like in big vans – they are along the steering column. To engage or disengage the shift, you need to step on the clutch pedal. A manual gearbox makes engine braking possible. These are generally cheaper and more fuel-efficient than automatic transmission cars. The more positive connection between the engine and the drive train also results in a slightly higher top speed.
- Automatic transmission – Again, when going through car classifieds, this is what sellers abbreviate as “AT”. Automatic transmission is, by far, easier to drive than any other transmission types. It has a computer box that selects the gears automatically depending on the speed. So you don’t have to learn to use the clutch pedal to shift gears. It relies on a torque converter placed between the engine and the transmission. This is driven by hydraulic fluids. This means it may not be as fuel efficient as a manual transmission.
- Sequential Manual Transmission – When you the letters SMT, this is what it means. It is a manual transmission vehicle with a computer controlled electronic clutch that will shift through the gears. It can shift a gear up or a gear down by pulling or pushing a paddle or lever. It is said to enhance speed, as such it is often used for race cars.
- Triptonic – This type of automatic transmission uses a triptonic gearbox. Automatic cars with this transmission type have a computer-controlled manual override which can result in better control of performance. It is sometimes referred to as a sequential sportshift, sportronic, autostick, steptronic, manual shift mode, sportronic and other names. This can allow the car to run like a sports car on open road and shift back to an automatic when stuck in a traffic jam.
- Continuously Variable Transmission – CVTs are automatic transmission vehicles that do not use a set of gears in the conventional way. It uses a system of opposing conical pulleys and belts in variable diameters. The belt moves vertically (up or down) on the shorter and wider circumference of the cones. It produces an infinite number of engine speed ratio and is dependent on the driver’s demand for power. It is a gearless system that can accelerate a car at varying ratios while holding the engine at a particular RPM. This transmission type gets rid of the jerk or the jolt sensation you get when shifting gears.
